19 years since the assassination of Lord British. How it was
British
Lord British of Cambridge (Lord Cantabrigian British) is the permanent king of Britain, who is also the personification of Richard Garriott, one of the founders of the Origin Systems, Inc studio.
Despite the fact that this legendary character appears in all games of the Ultima series as the main plot driver and simply the main “good” character, many players had the desire to kill him, either considering the ruler a complete asshole who deserved death, or deciding to accomplish something seemingly impossible.
Every time the developers tried to make British indestructible. They failed every time. Players, whether by simply calling out, using ultimate weapons of death, or skillfully using bugs, still destroyed the monarch.
Garriott admired the sophistication of fans of the series in finding ways to kill British. At some point, he decided to give an outlet to the players and deliberately himself prescribed a couple of colorful ways to kill the lord in Ultima VII: The Black Gate.
In Ultima Online, Garriott controlled his alter ego himself from the very beginning of the alpha test until the transfer of all rights to the game to the notorious Electronic Arts. In this role, he organized all sorts of events and somehow tried to organize public life, giving orders to his associate administrators (who also played members of the royal court).
Richard Garriott, like any of the developers, placed an immortality flag on his character when entering the game. No matter how much he liked watching players kill his personification, he couldn’t allow this to happen in an online game: it would bring too many problems. (You should also not forget that although British could be killed in single Ultima, this made the passage either more difficult or completely impossible).
Stress test
On August 9, 1997, about a month before the official release of the game, Garriott decides to gather a crowd of people and conduct a stress test in Blackthorne Castle: to check whether the servers can withstand a large crowd of people in one place. To stir up interest, it was announced that Lord British would attend the meeting along with Lord Blackthorne (an avatar of another developer, Starr Long).
Rhines
One of the many https://gamblingdata.net/casinos/prestige-casino/ gathered was Rainz, whose real name was never revealed. It was only known that he was 23 years old and the head of a certain Indianapolis Internet company. He absolutely loved the interactivity of UO. His goal was to maintain the balance of power in Britain. Which also included the removal of Lord British, the immortal tyrant.
“I knew it was possible to kill British, but I didn’t expect that it could be done so early,” Rines shared his memories a week after the events described.
As a tyrant fighter, Reines and his friends simply could not help but attend this event.
Death of a Tyrant
99% of the population of all Britain gathered. Only a few were lucky enough to be in the castle itself (their nicknames: Rainz, Dr.Pepper, Mental, DemonSoth, Haaaaaach, Helios, Phobos, Gildoreal, Wind Lord and Kylan).
"Lord British, Blackthorn and their jesters were on the wall in front of the crowd. Unfortunately, at that moment I was not playing as a mage, so I could not use the spell book. But I was a great thief.
In desperation, I rummaged through the backpacks of everyone around me. In the end I came across a scroll with the “wall of fire” spell. »
Reinz was extremely lucky: the developers, in order to slightly reduce the load on the server, turned off all security in the castle.
"Would you please stop stealing?"- asked British.
“Then everything was simpler,” Reines continued in his interview. “I just cast a spell on British and waited.»
All the speakers thought that, given their invulnerability, the spell would not harm them in any way. If not for one thing..
“I don’t remember whether Lord British or Lord Blackthorne said: “Hehe, nice try.”. After this joke, I thought that I would be struck by lightning or some other evil fate. Instead I heard British’s dying breath."
The thing is that at that time Richard Garriott simply forgot to include immortality for his personification, which became fatal for the lord.
“I looked at the corpse of Lord British in disbelief. Then he burst into loud laughter."
Everyone was shocked. Shouts of "HE’S DEAD" and "Lord British is dead" began. »
“After the murder, pure chaos began. Blackthorn summoned four demons, killing everyone left and right. I tried to escape.»
Consequences
Ryze failed to escape the all-seeing eye of Origin: his account was banned.
“Origin found my playstyle to be disruptive to the beta test. For a long time I played an evil character who killed many hundreds of people. Some developers were against this. I was even once forced to erase my evil character "Aquaman". I thought they would leave me alone. But the murder of British was the last straw for the administration, so I was banned from all current and future Origin projects forever. »
After that interview with the player who played for Reinz, no one in the future was able to contact the legendary killer.
The game administration insisted that they intended to ban Reinz before this incident and that the murder of British had no effect on the administrators’ decision.
The players protested this decision, considering it too harsh a reaction to the murder of British.
Years later, Garriott commented on the murder: “RINES. Someday I’ll take my revenge on you! When this all happened I was shocked and surprised. I couldn’t talk anymore. I couldn’t resurrect myself. The UO team decided to kill everyone in the castle, since we did not yet know that it was Reinz. I was alone in my office. But someone from the administration saw me and resurrected me .»
Conclusion
The legendary murder of British once again reminded the developers of the emerging MMORPG genre that at any moment everything could easily get out of their control. The players received another hint: a lot of interesting things can happen in MMORPGs that were not foreseen by the administration..
