Which genre do you prefer?? [no, this is not another vote in the style: “What color are your socks?”]

Hello, my dear bloggers! Here and now I would like to speculate on this topic – why we often give preference to games of one genre or another? What exactly drives us when, in search of the next killer of our time, we put a keyword in the search engine filter or approach the shelves of a store with a certain genre??

Well, let’s get started.

I myself asked this question when, once again opening the folder with game shortcuts on my desktop, I found there only civilizations, total wars, X-coms and the unrealistically cool and all-consumingly beautiful Warcraft.

No, I had previously suspected myself of a morbid craving for such games, but I didn’t even suspect that it had gone to such an extent.
But let’s take it in order.

Why do people play noidverificationcasinos.co.uk games at all?? For some, this is a chance to relax after a hard day at work

school day, for some it’s a way to have fun in a stoned campaign of the same drug addicts like you (hello to my long-standing, many-year-old Dota nerd), and for others, this is how they detach themselves from the not entirely colorful reality around them, and for others, they play for the sake of playing, because it has already become a part of their life, their Self.

In my not at all humble opinion, one of the determining factors is precisely the purpose for which we pick up a plastic rodent, put on headphones and double-click on the shortcut of a particular game. I very much doubt that a person who has been working hard all day at work or has just passed a test in chemistry, which I so hate, will sit down and start playing StarCraft in the most pretentious and cool league, because the only thing he wants now is to relax, lounging in a soft chair and drinking tea with cookies, beer, cognac and cola, apple juice (^_^), coffee with croissants (underline as appropriate). And to a hedgehog lost in the fog, it is clear that for this purpose a person will choose something peaceful and not requiring any mental, emotional, and even more so physical costs. Something light, meditative and slow like the same Sims or some soapy movie where you need to “Press X to WIN” is suitable here. You can also squeeze in some turn-based strategies at an easy difficulty level here, because they are very meditative and perfectly relaxing. And each situation has its own preferences and wishes. For example, trying to play single-player games with a large campaign while hanging out in a cheapskate’s console is somehow unreasonable, although there may be fans of this, but that’s not the point.

The second important criterion, in my opinion, is the psychological portrait of a person and his individual inclinations. Let me give myself as an example. With my ambitions as the emperor of the universe and my overdeveloped self-esteem, I really love to command little people and always want to use my brains. Therefore, my element, as I indicated above, is various strategies, and the larger and more global they are, the better. I’m also quite friendly towards various puzzles like Portal and the like, but they still don’t stay with me for long, and rightly so, because I can’t make an entire continent suffer in them!

And so each of you has some inclinations, because of which he chooses a certain genre as his preferred one.

Also, according to my personal observations, vivid memories from childhood play a very important role. The first game or what you played all day long at the beginning of your gaming career. And as an argument, I will again give an example from my own life. I started my gaming career with shogi. Well, many of you probably remember such huge collections of codes and walkthroughs for Sega games. The first time I saw one of these from a friend, I immediately took it away from him and said that I would take it for myself for a while (you can already feel my ego, yes?). Well, having dabbled a lot with various cheats and fatalities, at the end of the book I found walkthroughs of various games, and flipping through the pages in search of familiar names, I came across such a Thing (yes, a Thing with a capital T) as Dune II. I read the passage like a book, reveling in the tactical moves described by the author and mentally replaying how I was building a base, building a huge army and then trampling the enemies of the Atreides family (back then I was still small and kind, but now my choice would, of course, fall on the handsome Harroken) into the sand of Arrakis.

This is probably when I started to get sick of strategies. And those times when I, having rented a second curling iron from a friend, hacked away at the second Warcraft with it! Yes, I sat for hours and days on end in front of the TV, forgetting about food and other body needs! Somehow nostalgia washed over me, so..
Everyone has similar memories from childhood, and I would be interested to hear your childhood adventures in all sorts of game worlds.

Multiplayer and cooperative games that require active interaction between players stand apart. Often, a person comes to them not from idleness or other reasons listed above, but for the pleasure received from communicating with his own kind, and various drug addictions that invariably accompany a gathering of friends. Of course, this will not replace live communication, but this is a separate conversation worthy of its own topic.

And in conclusion, I would like to say that everyone has a favorite genre, but it is not at all necessary that you only play it. It’s just in it (in the genre (in games of this genre, here)) that you spend most of the time that you sit at the computer and it is these games that bring you the greatest satisfaction both during the gameplay itself and during nostalgic memories of hours spent in the vastness of some Azeroth, clearing yet another Stratholme from hordes of standard and not so undead.

Why do you choose this or that genre of games?? Try to look into yourself and understand, because it is so useful to know what motivates you..
Something somehow turned out very pathetic, but pathos is cool, right?
